Pain is the Doorway to Who You Are.
Pain is the doorway to remember who we are. Emotional, existential or social, the human being would do anything to avoid it. The more we try to avoid it, the more painful it grows. Not only that, it will keep knocking until we answer, and every knock will be louder.
'Comfortably Numb'
Our current hedonistic society invites to seek constant sensory pleasures, the possession of material things and immediate gratification. There is no room for depth or soul. It priotarises the superficial and mindless distractions over the importance of personal development or growth. The modern quick fix, creates a new type of addiction, and it is avaible immediately. There comes a time when the quick fix won't work, but that's a story for another day. '
The quick fix doesn't seem to work. The world is facing a plague of loneliness, anxiety and lack of meaning.
Pain
Pain lives within. It is caused by the internal reaction to external situations. Society does not teach the child how to handle pain, and the child doesn't have the tools to deal with it either. The child grows, eventually turning into the adult that faces different times of pain according to age, circumstances and experiences.
Not knowing how to handle it, we learn to live with it, but mostly how to avoid it or numb it. Pain, having a body of its own, eventually returns.
The Descent Before The Ascend
Pain lives in a dark room. It is an invitation for us to listen. Not to fix, not to offer solutions; not to do anything about it.
It is the beginning of the descend. It makes us humble. It might bring a strong sense of weakness. The hard armour drops. We might feel hopeless and defendless, like the child we once were. But it's not what it appears to be. It is the descend before the ascend. It is an intimate journey to the core of the self, where we can only travel alone. There, in the dark room is where we hold the centre of our being, and all the treasures that we can never find outside.
In silence we feel, we listen for as long as it takes. Then we return. More true to the self, more complete and with a new vision of the self and the world.
Trying to avoid it or numbing is another form of running that goes nowhere. You are always you. You are always here even if you're trying to be there. Wanting to be there is because you have not yet found the treasures within, but you remember, and you can sense it. There is not there, it's always, here.
It is more painful to remain at the door, than to enter it. Within there is no pain. Only you, No longer in pain. No longer distracted. No longer in need. No longer alone. What you find is love, joy, creativity.
What It is
Sitting in the darkness, thoughts and memories may come. It's not about engaging in a inner conversation, so as to feed the energy of the past, but listening to the what the pain has to say, to feel for once; to stop ignoring the signal of the soul, of the inner child, of your true nature.
It's not about dwelling in the past or complete stagnation until the pain is gone, but living in the moment, knowing the pain and the grief is there. What you could have been without it, with the right support, but also acknowledging that without the experience, the present moment wouldn't carry its wisdom; and this balances the energies. In the present moment. All lives in the present moment.
